विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत हिंदू वर्ष की अन्य 23 एकादशियों पर उपवास रखने के बराबर है. इस एकादशी का पुण्य पितरों को अर्पण करने से उन्हें मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है. वे नरक की यातनाओं से मुक्त होकर स्वर्गलोक प्राप्त करते हैं. मान्यता के अनुसार जो मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत करता है उसके पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और उसे जीवन-मरण के बंधन से मु्क्ति मिल जाती है. यानी कि उसे मोक्ष की प्राप्ति हो जाती है.
मोक्षदा एकादशी व्रत कथा
मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत मनुष्यों के पाप दूर कर उनका उद्धार करने वाले श्री हरि के नाम से रखा जाता है. एक कथा के अनुसार चंपा नगरी में एक प्रतापी राजा वैखानस रहा करते थे. चारों वेदों के ज्ञाता राजा वैखानस बहुत प्रतापी और धार्मिक राजा थे. उनकी प्रजा खुशहाल और संपन्न थी. एक दिन राजा ने सपना देखा, जिसमें उनके पिता नरक में यातनाएं झेलते दिखाई दिए. सपना देखने के बाद राजा बेचैन हो उठे और सुबह होते ही उन्होंने पत्नी को सबकुछ बता दिया. राजा ने यह भी कहा, ‘इस दुख के कारण मेरा चित्त कहीं नहीं लग रहा है, मैं इस धरती पर सम्पूर्ण ऐशो-आराम में हूं और मेरे पिता कष्ट में हैं.’ पत्नी ने कहा महाराज आपको आश्रम में जाना चाहिए. राजा आश्रम गए. वहां पर कई सिद्ध गुरु थे, जो तपस्या में लीन थे. राजा पर्वत मुनि के पास गए और उन्हें प्रणाम कर उनके पास बैठ गए. पर्वत मुनि ने मुस्कुराकर आने का कारण पूछा.राजा अत्यंत दुखी थे और रोने लगे. तब पर्वत मुनि ने अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से सब कुछ जान लिया और राजा के सिर पर हाथ रखकर बोले, ‘तुम एक पुण्य आत्मा हो, जो अपने पिता के दुख से इतने दुखी हो. तुम्हारे पिता को उनके कर्मों का फल मिल रहा है. उन्होंने तुम्हारी माता को तुम्हारी सौतेली माता के कारण बहुत यातनाएं दीं. इसी कारण वे इस पाप के भागी बने और अब नरक भोग रहे हैं.’ राजा ने पर्वत मुनि से इसका हल पूछा इस पर मुनि ने उन्हें मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत का पालन करने और इसका फल अपने पिता को देने के लिए कहा. राजा ने विधि पूर्वक व्रत किया और व्रत का पुण्य अपने पिता को अर्पण कर दिया. व्रत के प्रभाव से राजा के पिता के सभी कष्ट दूर हो गए. उन्हें नरक के कष्टों से मुक्ति मिल गई. स्वर्ग को जाते उन्होंने अपने पुत्र को आशीर्वाद भी दिया.
